Te Aro Salt Water Baths

Talk by the new ‘Better Te Aro Collective’ of its idea to install a new hot saltwater outdoor pool next to Freyberg Pool made me in think of the old Te Aro salt water baths which once enclosed a section of the harbour in the same position. There are a great set of photos of the building.  The pools were gender-segregated and, according to Te Ara, were a famous gay hangout.  They were demolished in the 1960s to make way for the fabulous Freyberg Pool (Bernard Freyberg – General, Victoria Cross winner, Governor General and champion swimmer – had trained at the pools).  I wonder if they will ever make a come back, as the Collective would like?
